City, Spurs and Liverpool all face German ties, United face PSG test

Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool will all face German opponents in the last 16 whilst Manchester United face a trip to France to take on PSG.

City came into the draw seeded as group winners whilst Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool were all unseeded after finishing their group stages as runner-ups, looking at daunting draws in the round of 16. 

Pep Guardiola’s side were drawn in the first tie of the knockout stages as they take on Leroy Sane’s former club Schalke. The tie will see City favourites to progress and advance to the quarter-finals. Especially with their Bundesliga opposition languishing in 13th in their domestic league. 

Tottenham’s opponents are Bundesliga table-toppers Borussia Dortmund, who won Group A with 13 points. Mauricio Pochettino’s men scraped through Group B after a memorable night in the Camp Nou. A late Lucas Moura equliser against Barcelona was enough to see them through at the expense of Inter Milan.

They will now hope his side can progress through to the quarter finals for the first time since their inaugural 2010/11 Champions League campaign but will face a stern test against a Dortmund side who have only tasted defeat once this season in all competitions. That a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in November. 


Jürgen Klopp will face a familiar foe with his Liverpool side matched up with Bayern Munich.

The German champions possess this seasons top goalscorer in Robert Lewandowski who has netted eight times thus far, but Bayern will know they must be at their best in order to overcome last years beaten finalists.

Their form throughout this season so far will not frighten the Reds. Bayern ended their Champions League group stage with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Ajax, showcasing their some of their defensive deficiencies.

They have also lost three games in the Bundesliga and currently sit third, nine points of leaders Dortmund.

Man United perhaps have the toughest draw of the English sides as they face Group C victors PSG.

Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani will pose a serious dangers to Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils, who will be looking to take inspiration from their match day four win over Juventus as they look to sink the French champions. 

United looked frail in defence during their 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, but may have new recruits by the time they face the Ligue 1 powerhouse with the January transfer window imminent.

The first leg of the ties will take place on 12th, 13th, 19th or 20th of February with the second legs commencing on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th.
