Radio Sounders Show: Arlo White on Commentating on Your Work Mates

[podcast]https://www.prostamerika.com/sound/Jan7show.mp3[/podcast]

In Part 2 of a special interview with Sounders FC commentator Arlo White, the popular English recruit from the BBC talks about the differences in styles between Nate Jaqua and Blaise Nkufo.

Arlo confesses to missing the passion of the people of Seattle for football and harks back to the US Open Cup Final, which he has been watching again to alleviate his ‘home’ sickness. He quotes those with a longer back catalogue who called it one of the best US club games ever.

Then sparks fly when he admits to having favoured the Sounders a little in his commentary, while being aware that away fans can follow him on Direct Kick.

He refers to the Seattle listening audience as mature and not wanting to be patronised with too biased a commentary. It is a fascinating and open introspective as Arlo talks about calling the performance of people who are also his work colleagues.

He reveals, for the first time, what his special catchphrase is for the times that a Sounders player messes things up.

The subject moves on to something even more controversial, the awards for the two World Cups and you’d be surprised which one outraged White more.

He expresses concern that the tournaments went to countries lacking a free press, but more interestingly joins the host in backing Panorama for their work exposing FIFA’s internal workings.

The he is allowed some gloat time over England’s victory over Australia at cricket but explains well the origins of such terms as the Ashes and the ‘Little Urn’

Finally, they look forward to the 2011 season and Arlo has one regret about having such a flying start to the calendar. He also has some interesting views on what would constitute a successful season for Sounders FC.
