Australia suffered their second red card in as many games when Harry Kewell was red carded half way through the first half of their Group D match with Ghana.
23 minutes had elapsed when he handled a Jonathan Mensah shot on the goal line with Mark Schwarzer beaten. Experienced referee Roberto Rosetti had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and sending Kewell off.
It was the second consecutive game that Australia had suffered an early red card, and the consecutive consecutive game that Ghana had befitted from such a call,. With the successful conversion of the penalty, Asamoah Gyan scored his second penalty of the tournament, still Ghana’s only tournament goals.
