New England Revolution 3-2 Red Bull New York
FOXBOROUGH, MA–Red Bull New York fought back from two down but it was not enough as they fell to a 3-2 defeat, leaving them in a difficult position with just two games to go.
New England took the lead early on through Dor Turgeman. Ronald Donkor was dispossessed in his own penalty area leading Carles Gil to lay it off for the striker who whipped a first time effort into the bottom right corner from just outside the penalty area.
Red Bulls came so close to an equalizer when Andres Ruvalcaba and Julian Hall both had close range efforts denied by Matt Turner. On the brink of half time, it was Cade Cowell and Mohammed Sofo’s turn to be denied. This time it was a save and a last ditch block that would stop them from finding a leveller.
Just 40 seconds into the second 45, the hosts would double their lead through Turgeman once again. Luca Langoni drilled a ball across the six yard box and the Israel international tapped in at the far post.
Cowell pulled one back for Michael Bradley’s side when he opened up on his left foot and curled an effort into the far corner, giving his side hope that they could potentially mount a comeback.
Julian Hall would find that equalizer, Adri Mehmeti slipped through a ball which was smartly left by Emil Forsberg and found its way through to Hall. The 18 year old showed great composure and calmly slotted past Turner to restore hope for his team.
Just two minutes later, the hosts went agonizingly close to taking the lead when Langoni just had to tap into the empty net but his effort came back off the woodwork, giving Red Bulls a lifeline.
Forsberg was next to have an effort from range and his strike whistled just past the post.
New England took the lead once again through Daniel Gazdag. Peyton Miller fired a low shot towards goal but Ethan Horvath was there to deny him, he could not deny Gazdag however, who followed up on the rebound lifting it over the helpless goalkeeper.
It was heartbreaking for the Red Bulls who had fought hard to find a way back into the game but it was not to be.
Ronald Donkor and Dylan Nealis both picked up yellow cards which will rule them out of the next match.
New York will travel to face high flying Nashville SC on Sunday, November 1.
Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET with coverage on Apple TV in English and Spanish.
