Gotham clinch home playoff game in draw

Gotham FC 1-1 Angel City FC

HARRISON, NJ–Gotham FC’s quest for the NWSL Shield hit a speed bump in a 1-1 draw against Angel City FC, though the result was enough to guarantee a home playoff game in the quarterfinals .Angel City retain the #6-seed with the draw.

Both teams had golden chances in the first half. An unmarked Sam Kerr pushed a shot wide for Gotham FC, while Prisca Chilufya did the same for Angel City a couple minutes later. Gotham found the breakthrough in the 66th minute as Rose Lavelle sent a low cross into the path of Jaedyn Shaw who put it into the roof of the net. Kerr again put a shot wide in the 84th minute that would have given the hosts a 2-0 lead.

It appeared that despite the missed opportunity, Gotham would still get all three points, but substitute Taylor Suarez would score in second half stoppage time to rescue a point for Angel City.

Gotham FC will look to clinch the shield on Saturday, October 18th, when they travel to Washington Spirit. Gotham need a win and if San Diego loses at North Carolina. Kickoff is at 12:30pm ET on CBS and Paramount+. Angel City travel to Denver on Saturday, October 18th (5:45pm PT, Ion).
