New England Revolution acquire defender Ethan Kohler from Werder Bremen

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution have acquired defender Ethan Kohler from Werder Bremen.

Kohler will occupy a senior roster slot.

Ethan Kohler is a 20-year-old, 6’0, 160lb defender from Campbell, California.

At the club level, Kohler has played 72 career games (5,003 minutes) across the United States & Germany. Kohler is a product of the San Jose Earthquakes academy that began his professional career with San Jose Earthquakes II (2022-23). In January of 2023, Kohler joined USL Championship side Oakland Roots SC (2023). In June of 2023, he was transferred to Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen (2023-25), where he initially was assigned to their youth sides. In June of 2024, he was loaned to SC Verl in the 3. Liga (DFB Bundesliga 3). New England will be his fifth professional club.

Internationally, Kohler has made 24 youth appearances (1,297 minutes) for the United States Youth National Team for the U19s, U20s, & U23s.

In total career club numbers, the defender has contributed 3 career goals, 5 assists, along with 6 yellow cards.

In total career international numbers, the defender has contributed 1 career goal.

“Ethan has emerged as one of the standout young talents in the U.S. youth national team program, with extensive club and international experience that has accelerated his growth into a mature and composed player,” Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo said. “Ethan is a versatile defender who can play both outside back and center back, providing us with important depth for the season ahead. We’re glad to welcome Ethan to New England and look forward to his arrival for preseason.”

Kohler, 20, will return to the United States & will re-unite with his former United States Youth National Team head coach Marko Mitrović & teammates Peyton Miller & Brooklyn Raines.

The young defender was a member of Marko Mitrović’s 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup side.

“He is an elite professional and highly competitive player, who loves to win,” Mitrovic said. “His work ethic and standards are very high, important qualities for our team and environment in creating a winning culture. Ethan’s strength on the ball can help us control the game in possession, though he is also one of those players who takes great pride in his defending. I am excited to have Ethan with us.”

Kohler joins a New England Revolution defender group that features Brayan Ceballos, Mamadou Fofana (Mali MNT), Ilay Feingold (Israel MNT), Peyton Miller (US YNT), Tanner Beason, Keegan Hughes, Damario McIntosh, Will Sands, Andrew Farrell, & Santiago “Tiago” Suarez.
