EFL Championship Gameweek 24 Review

The Championship closed out 2025 with another enthralling set of fixtures. Here are some standouts from gameweek 24 in England’s second tier.

Coventry City 0-2 Ipswich Town

1st met 3rd and it begged the question of whom were in the respective positions, as Ipswich ended Coventry’s home unbeaten run with a fine display.

The Tractor Boys were bright from the outset and conjured up plenty of opportunities to take the lead, with the best chance falling to Jack Taylor, who forced a flying stop out of Carl Rushworth, a contender for save of the season.

However, Coventry entered the second half with more vigor, but the killer blow arrived with about fifteen minutes from time, as Jack Clarke’s deflected effort flew up.

On his return from his ACL injury, Wes Burns wrapped up proceedings. Coventry remaining eight points clear after results, but the gap to Ipswich reduced. The Tractor Boys now only two points behind 2nd placed Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough 0-1 Hull City

Hull avenged their demons from earlier in the month in this fixture, beating Middlesbrough at the Riverside as Boro grip on second was weakened. Hull another side to close to two points behind.

The first half momentum swung Middlesbrough’s way, but it was Hull who took the lead through Darko Gyabi.

Boro continued to probe but remained toothless up front. Three goals without a goal for Middlesbrough and the chasing pack beginning to catch up.

Norwich City 0-1 Watford

Norwich’s slump continued but Watford’s rise increased in pace as they climbed into the play-off spots after a solid win at Carrow Road.

Neither side landed a blow in the opening period; neither with a shot on target.

The second half told a similar story and the game was heading to a goalless stalemate, until Vivaldo Semedo struck as the clock struck ninety. The Hornets jubilant, The Canaries wings clipped once more as they sink to second bottom of the division.

Birmingham City 1-1 Southampton

The later kick-off showcased two more promotion hopefuls at St. Andrew’s, with both sides sharing the spoils.

Southampton shaded their shares of the ball, but the hosts created the more clear cut chances without gaining any advantage.

Phil Neumann broke the deadlock for the hosts with a powerful nod that sailed past Gavin Bazunu as Birmingham looked to edge their way back up the division and end their recent hiatus.

Cameron Archer’s introduction from the bench proved to be an inspired one, as he rounded out the scoring and earning Southampton a point with a smart finish.
