DP forward Tomás Chancalay traded to Minnesota United in cash trade for $100,000

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution have traded Designated Player forward Tomás Chancalay to Minnesota United FC for $100,000

Chancalay will join Minnesota as a Designated Player & will occupy an international senior roster slot (for now – he’s currently working toward acquiring his green card). The move opens a DP slot & international slot for New England.

Tomás Chancalay is a 26-year-old, 5’10, 163lb forward from Viale, Argentina.

At the club level, Chancalay has played 249 career games (15,746 minutes) across Argentina, United Arab Emirates, & the United States. Chancalay began his career with Argentine Primera Division side Club Atlético Colón. In 2021, Chancalay was sent on loan to Argentine Primera Division side Racing Club de Avellaneda with a purchase option that was eventually triggered. While at Racing, he was sent on loan to UAE Pro League side AL Wasl F.C. In 2023, he was loaned to New England Revolution with a purchase option that was eventually triggered. Minnesota United FC will be his fourth professional club.

Internationally, Chancalay has made 6 youth appearances (321 minutes) for the Argentina Youth National Team for the U20s in International Friendlies & the U20 World Cup.

In total career club numbers, the forward has contributed 54 career goals, 24 assists, along with 41 yellow cards and 5 red cards.

In total career international numbers, the forward has contributed 1 career goal along with 1 yellow card.

Mid-day on Friday, December 26th, journalist Andy Greder of Pioneer Press had reported that Minnesota United FC had acquired Tomás Chancalay via cash-for-player trade with New England Revolution.

Just 2 hours later, the deal was confirmed. Deal for $100,000. NE retains a sell-on percentage if Chancalay is transferred out of MLS. The move is extremely similar to that of NE’s trade of Giacomo Vrioni to CF Montreal, back in 2024.

After the announcement was made, Sporting Director Curt Onalfo stated, “On behalf of the Revolution, I’d like to thank Tomás for his contributions during his time with our club. We wish him and his family all the best as he begins this next chapter with Minnesota.”

This move doesn’t come as a surprise for New England Revolution fans as the DP forward’s partner had leaked the news just weeks prior.

In a post to Instagram, Chancalay’s partner stated, “Arriving at a new place and starting from scratch, meeting, forming bonds, and again leaving, this is what it’s all about… Another stage that comes to an end, we came as 3 and we are leaving as 5. On the way, we met people who became family and who made the distance not noticeable, thanks to all of them for forming part of our lives in these two years and peak. Thank you, USA, for so many good times and good people! We are going to miss you so much.”

Following the post, sources had indicated that the family had left their Massachusetts home and had already purchased a mansion in Chancalay’s hometown of Viale.

On December 4th, Chancalay sat down with the Soccer_Is_Futbol podcast to speak on his time in New England.

Speaking on the competition of the league, Chancalay stated, “The league is very competitive. I think the league has gone to another level. That doesn’t mean that the league wasn’t competitive before, but it definitely raised the bar and changed the competition a lot.”

He also mentioned the important family aspect 0n why he chose to play in MLS over other leagues. He stated, “This league gives you that calm environment where you can enjoy a walk in the park with your family. We can do much more normal things, go to a supermarket, go to a park, etc. I can tell you that in the Argentine league and in other leagues, that’s sort of difficult to do.”

Prior to this move, Chancalay reportedly was receiving interest from Argentine Primera Division sides Club Atlético River Plate & Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield.

Chancalay joins a Minnesota United forward group that features DP Kelvin Yeboah, Samuel Shashoua, Kenyel Michel, Mamadou Dieng, Darius Randell, Jordan Adebayo-Smith & Bongokuhle Hlongwane.
