Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 Portland Timbers
SEATTLE, WA–In the last Cascadia Cup match of the regular season, Seattle Sounders FC defeated the Portland Timbers, 1-0, before a crowd of 32,913 at Lumen Field. The Sounders have an outside chance at fourth in the Western Conference with two matches remaining, while the Timbers are still not mathematically assured a playoff spot and could finish anywhere between sixth and tenth with one match remaining.
The match’s only goal came in the 16th minute in a well-worked team goals that finished with Paul Rothrock laying it out in front for Perdo de la Vega to finish from point blank range to put the Sounders head for what turned out to be the only goal.
Stefan Frei made four saves on the evening keeping a clean sheet, including a spectacular save on David DaCosta in the 34th minute. Maxime Crepe did his part for the Timbers with a couple of saves keeping the visitors in the match.
It was not all good for the Sounders as late in stoppage time, a late challenge by Albert Rusnak on Omir Fernandez was deemed serious foul play by VAR. He will miss next Saturday’s match against Real Salt Lake (7:30pm PT, Apple TV). Meanwhile, the Timbers will go to Decision Day with their fate unknown at this point hosting West leaders San Diego (6pm PT, Apple TV).
