Inter Miami 4-1 New England Revolution

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—On a night when they honored Sergio Busquets ahead of his retirement at the end of season, his teammate dating back to FC Barcelona would make history of his own in a 4-1 win over New England Revolution.

Lionel Messi got three assists to become the second man in MLS history to record 40 goal contributions. The other was Carlos Vela who had 49 contributions for LAFC in 2019.

The first half ended up all Inter Miami from the 20th minute, Lionel Messi passed to a criminally unmarked Tadeo Allende in the 32nd minute to give the Herons the lead. Just before halftime, after a cheap giveaway off a restart, it went to Messi who slalomed past Tanner Beason and laid it off for Jordi Alba to make it 2-0.

New England actually looked to have some life in the 59th minute after Don Turgeman sent a shot into the upper 90 from just outside the box. That lasted just 45 seconds as Messi found Allende once again to restore the two-goal lead. Three minutes later, Alba would get his second on the only goal where Messi did not get an assist. That one went to Telasco Segovia.

Inter Miami move up to third in the Eastern Conference with their fourth win in six matches. Meanwhile, the already-eliminated Revolution have now lost four of their last six.

Inter Miami will remain home next Saturday when they play Atlanta United (7:30pm ET, Apple TV). New England will conclude their disappointing season on Decision Day, October 18th, at home against Chicago (6pm ET, Apple TV).

It was a “get-right” match for Inter Miami after a draw at Toronto FC and a loss to Chicago. They did so in a big way.
