More late dramatics see Austin past Sounders

Austin FC 2-1 Seattle Sounders

AUSTIN, TX–From Sunday’s action, The Verde like the late-goal drama. It started last Wednesday with a goal at the end of extra time to advance to the US Open Cup Final over Minnesota United. On Sunday, it was a goal six minutes into stoppage time that saw Austin defeat Seattle, 2-1. The Verde are eight points clear of the playoff line in sixth place and can clinch a playoff spot on Saturday with victory at Real Salt Lake (8:30pm CT, Apple TV).

Diego Rubio got Austin on the board in the 42nd minute as he intercepted a pass from Jackson Ragan and got in behind the defense to blast the ball past Andrew Thomas. The lead lasted only 35 seconds into the second half as Danny Musovsky sent a low cross into Georgi Minoungou’s direction for the equalizer.

The Sounders had numerous chances to take the lead, but were stymied almost at every turn by Brad Stuver who made five saves on the night. The law of missed chances would come to bite the Sounders as in the sixth minute of stoppage time as Dani Pereira sent a cross to CJ Fodrey who then flicked it on for Myrto Uzuni to put into an open net.

The Sounders will look to rebound against Cascadia Cup rival Vancouver on Saturday (7:30pm PT, Apple TV). Vancouver will win the Cascadia Cup with a draw on Saturday.
