Philadelphia handles Atlanta United FC 3-0

April 19, 2025

Chester, PA

It was a full house at Subaru Park on Saturday evening, with fans either mourning the transfer of Daniel Gazdag to Columbus or simply wondering how the team would respond at home without its no. 10.  Gazdag had been an enigma for Union fans.  To be sure, the depth of his experience ruddered the offense, but then there were the near-misses – those picture perfect goals called offside or the sure thing goals that missed.  Still, it is hard to part ways with the team’s all time scoring leader, even if most of the goals scored were PKs.

Philadelphia did well — very well — against Atlanta United without Gazdag.  While everyone was thinking about Gazdag starting in the Miami-Columbus game, Philadelphia walked away with a 3-0 victory over Atlanta United, holding onto the clean sheet even with the red card following two yellows issued to Jovan Lukic.

Philadelphia’s Quinn Sullivan got the scoring started in the 27th minute.  An unmarked Sullivan was gifted a lofting ball from the collision of Atlanta’s Bartosz Slisz and Stian Gregersen.   The ball hit Sullivan’s chest, but didn’t hit the ground, as Sullivan scorched the ball past Atlanta’s keeper, Brad Guzan.  The score was 1-0 in favor of the Union at halftime.

The second goal came from an unlikely source.  Danley Jean Jacques has been a great defensive and passing addition to the Union.  But his scoring instincts had not made an appearance, that is until Saturday.  At the 50th minute, Kai Wagner passed long right to Bruno Damiani, who then passed left to Mikael Uhre.  A sprinting Danley was coming up on the left and Uhre passed left.  Danley shot right between Guzan’s legs, giving Uhre the assist.

The third and final goal came from Tai Baribo, ensuring his lead this week in MLS’s goal scoring statistics at seven goals on the season.  Baribo’s goal came on cross by Quinn Sullivan directly skimming onto Baribo’s head and landing into the left side of the Atlanta net.
