LA Galaxy face challenges to repeat in 2025

With the confetti having settled in on a season of revival, the Los Angeles Galaxy are now tasked with defending the throne in 2025.

Getting back to the top was certainly difficult for the Galaxy. Long regarded as a model of success in the early days of MLS, with a trophy case matched by a few clubs. The last few years prior to 2024 were anything by glorious for the Galaxy. However, a series of moves, starting with the hiring of general manager Will Kuntz, and the arrival of forwards Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil reenergized the team, and they soon became one of the best teams in the league.

Pec and Paintsil teamed with midfielder Riqui Puig to form a tandem that earned them the nickname, the “Killer P’s.” The trio whose last names began with the same letter, formed with striker Dejan Joveljic to form one of the most lethal offenses in MLS. Combined with a back line that bent, but did not break at times, the Galaxy stayed toe-to-toe with LAFC for the top spot in the Western Conference, but a loss to Houston on the last week of the season denied them the top spot. The Galaxy did not let that loss deter them, rolling through Colorado and Minnesota in the first two rounds of the playoffs, then survived a dogfight with Seattle in the Western Conference Final before capping of its revival season with a win over the New York Red Bulls for its first MLS Cup title in a decade.

However, if getting back to the top was challenging for the Galaxy, staying there might prove to be more difficult this season. The Galaxy’s repeat chances took a blow even during last year’s playoff run, as Puig tore his ACL in the conference final, and while the Galaxy had just enough to get them through to the MLS Cup title, but having to go without its playmaker for a eight-month grid filled with midweek matches galore will certainly provide a test for the Galaxy.

Puig’s injury won’t be the only loss for the Galaxy. The team took advantage of a new rule in MLS that now enables teams to exchange players for straight cash within the league, and they traded Joveljic to Sporting Kansas City for $4 million. The Galaxy have attempted to fill the void left by Joveljic’s presence at the No. 9, first by acquiring MLS veteran Christian Ramirez, then by acquiring Brazilian striker Matheus Nascimento on loan from Botafogo. The back line, led by Maya Yoshida, remains intact as does John McCarthy at the keeper spot.
