Fire sign Danish midfielder Zinckernagel from Brugge

CHICAGO, IL–Chicago Fire FC sent one Dane on his way in defender Tobias Salquist to Danish Superliga side Nordsjælland on Thursday and picked up another in midfielder Phillip Zinckernagel from Belgian side Club Brugge. Zinckernagel arrives as a TAM (transfer allocation money) signing and is signed with the Fire thru 2028. Zinckernagel will occupy an international slot on the Fire’s roster, pending completion of a medical and receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“We wanted to bring in a high-impact player for one of our TAM positions, and Philip fits that profile perfectly,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “He’s a technical and versatile player who can create chances for himself and his teammates, while also showing a commitment to defending. With experience playing in multiple countries and elite European competitions, Philip will bring a winning mentality and leadership to our squad for the upcoming season and beyond.”

Zinckernagel, 30, has made over 400 appearances with nine different teams since turning pro in 2013. His greatest success was with Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in two stints. His first stint from 2018 to 2020 saw him score 31 goals in 82 appearances leading to a league title in 2020. He retuned to the club on loan from Brugge in 2024 where he would be part of another title winning team. Other notable stops include Watford, Nottingham Forest (loan), Olimpiacos, and Standard Liege.

“I’m very excited to join the Chicago Fire and experience a new league,” said Zinckernagel. “The Club’s ambition and vision for the future are very motivating, and I’m eager to help the team achieve its goals. I look forward to working with the coaching staff and my new teammates to build something special together.”

Zinckernagel can officially join on January 31st when the MLS transfer window officially opens, but can join the Fire during preseason pending receipt of his work visa.
