Miami secured the record for the most points in a single season, beating New England’s tally by one point as they were forced to come from behind in an exciting game that had the fans on the edge of their seats throughout.

It was another vintage display from Lionel Messi as he scored his first MLS hat trick and his second three-goal haul in a matter of days after representing his country last week.

However, it was the Revolution that started the game with intent. They caught Miami napping in the opening minutes as Luca Langoni made the most of some fortuitous deflections before beating Drake Callender at his near post.

Inter immediately looked to reply as they took control of the game, dictating the pace and enjoying plenty of the ball. A good forward run by Martinez was rewarded when he received the return ball and then found Luis Suarez, who created the space and left Aljaz Ivacic no chance. And in the blink of an eye, the scores were level.

Suarez again collected the ball in the attacking half. He was allowed to run at the back line before unleashing a shot that Ivacic couldn’t stop, and parity was restored.

On the hour mark, the game was turned on its head when Messi was introduced to the match. Within seconds, he was involved with his first touch of the ball. A sublime dinked pass completely opened up New England as Miami took the lead for the first time, a lead they would not give up.

New England continued to try and had a goal correctly disallowed for handball after Callender made a good save, but Messi’s night was far from finished.

He followed up his midweek hattrick for Argentina with another for his club in a ten-minute passage of play that tore New England apart and confirmed the record-breaking win.

The famous left foot was on show with a stunning strike from outside the area for his first, followed minutes later with his second. A threaded pass by Alba split the defense, and Messi did the rest.

The cherry on top arrived late on after Leo Campana chipped pass to Suarez, whose volleyed cross was met by Messi to complete a stunning hattrick.

It was a well-deserved win for a team that dominated the season and never looked like giving up the title easily.

The win was also enough to secure Miami’s place in the FIFA World Club Cup, where they will face some of the best and most successful clubs in the world.
