Charlotte FC loses 1-0 to Philadelphia Union in first Leagues Cup match

Charlotte FC fell to the Philadelphia Union 1-0 in their first Leagues Cup fixture.

It was a disappointing performance for Charlotte, who was coming off three matches unbeaten on the road. Charlotte had a total of just seven shots and failed to get a single shot on target throughout the match. Six of Charlotte’s seven shots were blocked.

Philadelphia didn’t generate many more chances than Charlotte did, with 10 total, but had four shots on target to Charlotte’s zero. Philadelphia’s goal came in the 33rd minute with a cutback pass from Dániel Gazdag to Tai Baribo.

After the 1-0 loss, Charlotte is now in a must win scenario for their upcoming match with Cruz Azul. If Charlotte loses to Cruz Azul in regulation or in penalty kicks, they will finish last in the group and be eliminated from Leagues Cup play.

The Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul will be played at home on Wednesday, July 31 with kickoff at 8:00 p.m. EST and streaming on Apple TV MLS Season Pass. The match will be Charlotte’s first home match since July 3.
