Liverpool advance to Champions League Quarter Finals with comfortable win in Amsterdam

Liverpool defeated Ajax 3-0 with three goals in a ten minute spell in the Amsterdam Arena.

If the Atmosphere at the start of the match was anything to go by Ajax would have won 5-0. But I suppose we all know sport does not work like that.

The young Ajax side looked sharper than Liverpool for the first 20 minutes. In the first minute Dutch internationalist Steven Berghuis hit the foot of the post to give last year’s finalists an early scare.

However slowly but surely Liverpool started to take control in the game and they got the important break through just before half time. Henderson slid a beautiful ball to Salah with the outside of his foot and the Egyptian delicately put it over the on-rushing Ajax keeper to make it 1-0 to the Reds in the 42nd minute.

The goal was like the flick of a switch. Liverpool suddenly played to a higher tempo and Ajax were not able to keep up.

Another great move that went from right to left and switched again to Firminio who layed it beautifully to Nunez from 6 yards. However he somehow managed to hit the post when it seemed easier to hit the back of the net.

The second half started like the first ended with Liverpool on the front foot. In the first five minutes they got a corner which Nunez got his head to and guided it inside the far post to make it 2-0 to Liverpool.

Two minutes later the game was done and dusted. A great move down the left with Mo Salah putting Harvey Elliott through on goal and from an acute angle he managed to put the ball into the roof of the net to make it 3-0.

It was harsh on Ajax but they are at least odds on favourite of having the consolation of going into the Europa League draw as reward for finishing third in the group if they can avoid losing by four or more goals at Ibrox next week in their last group match.

Liverpool and Napoli will fight it out for first and second spots in the group with both now having made it through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League in late February.
