Liverpool inflict heaviest ever defeat for Rangers

Liverpool came back from losing an early goal to win 7-1 against a stunned Rangers side in Glasgow in the UEFA Champions League.

A red hot atmosphere in Ibrox greeted the players for part two of the “Battle of Britain”. Liverpool’s Premiership form of late has been below the high standards they’ve set in recent seasons and they have to look as far back as 31 August for their last win, a narrow 98^th minute injury-time victory goal against Newcastle.

However they would have headed north from Liverpool to Glasgow with the confidence from the comfortable 2-0 win the previous week at Anfield against Rangers.

That confidence however was tested when Rangers took an early lead thanks to Arfield who hit a great finish low and hard past Allison in the 17^th minute.

The roof nearly came off the stadium and if it was for atmosphere alone then Rangers would win every European game they played at home!

Liverpool hit back quickly however. A corner was swung into the box in the 24th minute and Firmino scored with a glancing header.

Rangers stayed solid in the first half and kept it 1-1 at half time. But there was a red storm coming in the second half and it was a great move with a sweeping ball in from Gomez for Firmino to score again to make it 2-1 on the night and 9 goals for the season so far from the rejuvenated man from Brazil.

The Brazilian was not finished yet. He slipped in Nunez who made it 3-1 to the Reds in the 66^th minute.

Klopp made three changes in the 67^th minute with Salah, Thiago and Robertson coming on. Shortly after, the magical Egyptian had scored the quickest hat trick in Champions League history with three goals in an incredible 6 minutes 12 seconds!

19-year old Harvey Eliott finished the scoring with number seven in the 88th minute. The English under-21 winger’s first European goal was initially ruled offside but was eventually confirmed by a VAR replay.

The defeat for Rangers leaves them rooted to the bottom of Champions League Group A with four defeats from four, having scored a solitary goal and conceded 16.

Liverpool fans will be hoping they can replicate some of their strong performances in Europe to their domestic form and kick start their league challenge.
