The Japanese driver made his debut with the Italian squad at the beginning of last season, following an impressive year in Formula 2 in 2020.
Partnering Pierre Gasly for his 38 races, Tsunoda has gradually improved to become a more consistent driver, following a difficult start to his career.
Tsunoda thanked Red Bull and AlphaTauri for the opportunity, saying:
“Having moved to Italy last year, to be closer to the factory, I really feel part of the team and am glad that I get to carry on racing with them in 2023.
“Of course, our 2022 season isn’t over yet and we’re still pushing hard in the midfield battle, so I’m fully focused on finishing it on a high and then we will look forward to next year.”
Tsunoda currently sits 16th in the Driver’s Championship with just three points finishes to his name, a best result of seventh at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost praised his driver for his improvement across the last two seasons, adding:
“The pace he has shown recently is clear evidence of a steep learning curve, which proves he deserves a seat in F1, and I still expect to see some strong results from him in the last six races of 2022.
“As I always say, a driver needs at least three years to fully get to grips with Formula 1, so I’m pleased he’s been given the time to show his full potential.”
Although teammate Gasly holds a contract with the Faenza-based outfit for next year, it remains unclear who will partner Tsunoda as the Frenchman continues to hold talks with Alpine.
A recent, although unlikely, candidate has emerged in the form of Nyck de Vries, after the Formula E world champion burst onto the scene through a fantastic stand-in performance at Monza with Williams.
