Pirates return back to winning ways to see off the Tigers

Poole Pirates returned back to winning ways with a welcome home victory against the visiting Glasgow Tigers 51-39.

In a meeting that was always going to be a close run thing, the meeting wasn’t decided until heat 13 when Pirates produced their third maximum of the night to see off the plucky Tigers.

In a match up that saw the second and third place sides in the league go head-to-head, it was Glasgow who drew first blood with a 5-1 heat advantage in the opening heat, compliments of Danyon Hume and Craig Cook.

Pirates responded when Ben Cook won heat two with reserve rider Nathan Ablitt in third. Subsequent 4-2 heat advantages from the home side gave Poole a narrow two-point lead after heat four.

Heat five was share before Pirates picked up their first 5-1 maximum of the night in the next heat when Tigers Tom Brennan’s mistake let in Drew Kemp to pick up second place behind Steve Worrall.

The visiting Tigers cut the gap to four points after a 4-2 in the next heat, before Pirates produced a 4-2 of their own to restore the advantage.

Being six points down, Tigers elected to use the tactical substitute rule by putting in Cook. The decision was vindicated when Cook finished behind his partner Brennan to reduce the deficit to just two points.

After heat ten was shared, Pirates produced a 5-1 in the next heat through Ben Cook and Lawson who held of the dangerous pairing of Cook and Hume.

Following a shared heat, the meeting was decided when Lawson and Worrall saw of the challenge of Cook and Brennan for a 5-1 which was enough for a Pirates win.

Lawson finished top points scorer for Poole with 13+1 with Danny King picking up 10 points and a very useful haul of 8+1 from reserve by Ben Cook.
