British Open Golf Championship- 2022 Preview

The 150th British Open Championship will start on Thursday from the Old Course at St. Andrews.

It will be the final major championship of 2022, which heads to the birthplace of golf. This will also be the first time this course has hosted the Open Championship since 2015, when American Zach Johnson won in a playoff.

The course itself is a par 72, 7,297 yards and is a traditional seaside links course., which is often referred to as The Old Lady.

It features the gigantic hell bunker on the 14th hole and the steep road hole bunker on the 17th.

It first staged the Championship in 1873 and it has been the venue a further 28 times since.

Las year’s winner Collin Morikawa will be in a star-studded field who will be bidding to win the event come Sunday afternoon.

Morikawa was the first debutant to take the title since Ben Curtis back in 1993. He also won the US PGA Championship ion debut too and he is currently the only man in history to win his first two majors in his first start in each and has a considerable chance of repeating last year’s success.

World number two, Rory McIlroy comes into the tournament looking like a player who is beginning to get back to his best.

He successfully defended the recent Canadian Open and finished fifth in the US Open. He decided to avoid the recent Scottish Open to concentrate on this years Open.

Despite his last British Open victory back in 2014 at Hoylake and his victory at the US PGA Championship a month later, this remains his last major victory.

American Xander Schauffele comes into contention after recently winning the Scottish Open.

He is in fine form coming into the tournament having won the Travelers Championship the week after finishing 14th in the US Open.

Although still awaiting his first major, the American should enjoy this type of course and conditions at St. Andrews.

Jon Rahm is a magnificent links exponent, having already won the Irish Open twice on a links layout in 2017 and 2019.

The Spaniard finished third last year and is also a recent winner on the PGA Tour in Mexico.

Jordan Spieth has a superb Open record and has steadily improved his game in recent months and is now back to the player he once was and will be a serious contender.

Will Zalatoris is a player who saves his best for the bigger tournaments. In his last eight majors he has finished in the top eight six times.

Louis Oostuizen won his first major championship back in 2010 at St. Andrews. He unluckily missed out in 2015 when they returned back to the Old Course in 2015, losing in a playoff.

The South African has had eight other top three finishes in majors without adding to his total. In two recent LIV series events he has had a fifth and twelfth place finish and is running into form nicely.

Max Homa has made the cut in all three majors this season and has four wins since 2019. A player who is steadily beginning to get noticed by the golfing world.
