Leclerc’s bad luck in Monaco continued today after losing yet another chance at victory around his home streets of Monaco, with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez emerging with victory.
The Ferrari driver started on pole position after dominating the Qualifying session yesterday, leading teammate Carlos Sainz and Perez in third.
Poor strategy calls from the polesitter’s squad left him off of the podium at the end of the race, and Leclerc believes that too many mistakes were made on their way to losing the win.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, he said:
“Sometimes, mistakes can happen but there’s been too many mistakes today, overall.
Obviously, in those conditions, you rely a little bit on what the team can see because you don’t see what the others are doing with intermediates, with dry tyres.
“We got undercut, then I stopped behind Carlos [Sainz]. There’s been a lot of mistakes and we cannot afford to do that. It’s hard as it’s been the other years here so I’m getting used to getting back home disappointed.
“I love my team and I’m sure that we will come back stronger. It hurts a lot.”
Leclerc now finds himself nine points behind title rival Max Verstappen, with Ferrari trailing in their fight with Red Bull Racing.
