A chaotic and long day in Monte Carlo ended with Perez taking the third win of his Formula 1 career, and the first around the streets of Monaco.
Following rain showers, an early Ferrari lead and a long stint to keep Sainz behind, Perez finished the race ahead of both Ferraris and his teammate, Max Verstappen.
Speaking to David Coulthard in the post-race interviews, he said:
“It’s a dream come true, as a driver, you dream of winning here. To do it and the way we did it, we just made it a bit harder for ourselves right at the end.
“With the graining I had, to not make any mistakes and bring it home, keeping Carlos behind wasn’t easy.”
Perez also spoke about becoming the most successful Mexican F1 driver after following his wins at Sakhir in 2020 and Baku last year.
He continued:
“I’m really, very happy. I was running, today, a Pedro Rodriguez helmet and, I’m sure up there, he’s super-proud of what we have achieved together in the sport.”
Perez now finds himself third in the championship standings, just fifteen behind teammate Verstappen. Red Bull extend their championship lead after a 1-3 in Monaco.
