The future looks bright for Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz

Spanish tennis seems to be flourishing at the moment with the name Carlos Alcaraz on the name of everyone’s lips as the next Rafael Nadal.

The young 19-year-old looks an outstanding prospect and yet again he produced another heroic display after digging himself out of a big hole at Roland Garros after coming back from the brink of defeat against Albert Rmaos-Vinolas in the French Open second round on Wednesday.

He faced match point in the fourth set but went on to win 6-1, 6-7, 5-7, 7-6 6-4 in a marathon match that lasted well over four hours.

Alcaraz has only been on the circuit for two years but has proved in other titanic battles against higher ranked seeds that he can mix with the best. He took out Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets at the 2021 US Open and also despatched the Greek on the way to winning the Barcelona Open.

At the Madrid Open recently, he looked down and out against World Number 1 Novak Djokovic but got through in three tight sets.

Already in 2022, he has a current winning record of 28-3, having already won four titles and up to number six in the world.

In the ATP Masters in Madrid, not only did he have to overcome the challenge of Djokovic but also had to beat Nadal on route to the final where he defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets 3 and 1.

The youngster had a disappointing Australian Open in January having lost to Italian Matteo Berrettini in the last 32.

Having already won four titles in 2022, ATP Masters 1000 Madrid, Barcelona, ATP Masters 1000 Miami and Rio de Janeiro, few would bet against this respected talented player one day lifting his first ever Grand Slam, having only got as far as the third round at both the French and Australian Open and second round at Wimbledon.

His versatile game of powerful groundstrokes mixed with perfectly executed drop shots backed with speed and having no fear make him a player that could well be dominating men’s tennis for a while to come.
