A ruthless Wigan side dismantled a disappointing Warrington team who appeared to have turned a corner in recent weeks with wins over Salford and Huddersfield.
The Warriors got off to a dream start scoring their first of seven tries in the opening minutes through Ian Thornley. Riley Dean provided an instant response for the hosts, but with his second try, Thornley gave the visitors the lead again
Having torn defences apart all season Jai Field added Warrington to his ever-growing list. The full-back showed his blistering pace to beat the Wolves’ defenders on the outside before finding Bevan French in support on his outside. The Wolves did however pull a try back through a speedster of their own with Matty Ashton diving over in the corner.
As the game approached the half there was still enough time for Wigan to score their fourth try. Patrick Mago found the onrushing Liam Farrell with a superb offload who showed his dazzling feet to leave three Warrington defenders in his wake to give the visitors a 24-10 lead at the break.
The second half did not get any better for the Wolves with a quickfire brace from Liam Marshall putting the game out of sight. Ethan Havard crashed onto a short ball from Harry Smith to bring up the 40 point mark, before late consolation tries from Danny Walker and Peter Mata’utia made the scoreline a little more respectable for the Wolves.
Matt Peet admitted it was an impressive performance from his side. “We came into a very challenging game tonight against a team who are looking to build momentum and it is a challenge we overcame. I think we were very good with the ball in hand. Getting the combinations between Harry and Cade was important and I thought they were very good tonight.
Following the 40-22 victory over their local rivals, the Warriors turn their attention to Challenge Cup action as they prepare to face the reigning Challenge Cup champions, St Helens, at Elland Road next weekend.
