Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter says his side didn’t deserve anything in their 3-0 defeat to title chasing Manchester City despite a resolute defensive performance for much of the game.

The Seagulls shut out City for 53 minutes before a ruthless display saw the hosts run out comfortable winners on the scoreline with Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva all on target.

Speaking post-match, Potter had nothing but praise for a relentless opposition on the night, admitting that the end result was a fair one.

“They’re a fantastic team and we know that. They played really well, and they deserved to win.

“You have to be perfect to come here and get anything, and we weren’t. In the end, with their quality over the course of the 90 minutes, we have no complaints.

“That’s the Premier League, you can suffer when you play these teams, but you have to put things into perspective quickly and move on.

“There’s no shame for us in losing to Manchester City, they were better than us. We need to prepare and recover for Southampton now.”

The Seagulls welcome the Saints to the AMEX Stadium on Sunday, April 24 with a 2:00pm kick-off.

It will signal a return home for Potter’s side after three successive away games against clubs in the Premier League’s ‘top six’.

Prior to Wednesday night’s defeat, Albion had won away at both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with the boss admitting he was happy overall after the three trips.

“Points wise, if you’d have been offered it before the three games, you’d probably have taken six from nine. Performance wise, we’ve played well, especially at Tottenham.

“We could’ve done without them [City] resting some of their players at the weekend because our performance had to go up a step again tonight and it didn’t, not with the ball.

“I thought we defended really well, particularly in the first half, but was just disappointed with how we were on the ball.”
