Wigan Warriors look to get back to winning ways against Castleford Tigers

Matty Peet’s Wigan side will be keen to put what went wrong against Catalan Dragons right on Thursday night when they return to the D.W. Stadium to face Castleford Tigers.

The Warriors had a mix of results over their ‘Tour de France’ including a dramatic late win against Toulouse before losing 28-0 to last years League Leaders Shield winners, Catalans.

The loss ended the Cherry and whites’ 100% start to the 2022 Super League season, leaving just St Helens to be the only team to still be unbeaten so far this season.

As for Castleford, they’ve had a difficult start to their first campaign in eight years without head coach Daryl Powell at the helm.

The Tigers have won just one of their first five matches so far this season, the victory coming against Hull FC at the Jungle. A hat-trick from Greg Eden boosted the Tigers on that day and gave them a vital first win of 2022.

However, Lee Radford’s side were unable to build on that win as they travelled to the John Smith’s Stadium in an all-Yorkshire tie.

Huddersfield Giants continued their impressive start to the campaign as they beat Cas 36-24 despite the visitors looking like they could mount an impressive comeback from 18-0 down after going ahead with four tries in 18 minutes.

In terms of team news, Wigan have made a couple of changes ahead of naming their 21-man squad for Thursday night’s game.

The two changes for the Warriors are enforced due to suspensions as Brad Singleton has been handed a two-match ban for a Grade B offence for a late hit whilst Kade Ellis was given a five-match ban after throwing punches against Catalans last time out.

In place of the suspended duo, Ethan Havard and Sam Halsall come into the side to face the out-of-form Tigers. Head coach Matt Peet didn’t appear too concerned by the suspensions however due to the confidence he has in the depth of his squad.

Peet said: “We’ve lost a couple of lads to suspension, so it gives opportunities to lads who have been waiting in the wings. One thing we’ve said from the start is that we believe we have good depth, we have quality young players and it is an opportunity to give them a crack.

“They’ve been waiting, they’ve been patient and we’ll get the opportunity to freshen up on Thursday night”

As for the visitors, Jordan Turner will be missing from the squad after suffering a fractured hand whilst youngster Sam Hall also drops out of the squad.

In replacement, George Griffin is back in contention after returning from a slight knock whilst Bureta Faraimo also returns after completing his two-match ban.

With the game being available live on Sky Sports, both sides will be keen to get back to winning ways in Lancashire as Wigan look to maintain a brilliant start to the season and Castleford look to really kick-start their campaign.
