Tigers look to continue winning run with victory on derby day

Castleford Tigers will be looking to make it three consecutive wins for the first time this season when they take on local rivals Wakefield Trinity in Super Leagues ‘Rival Round’

The Tigers head into this weekends game on the back of wins over Leeds Rhinos and perhaps most impressively St Helens. Winning away at Saints is something that is a hard achievement for any team that plays there especially over the last three seasons.

However, for the Tigers winning there last week ended a 32-year wait for a victory at the home of the back to back champions.

For Wakefield, they will see this fixture as a chance to make it back to back wins themselves as they chase a first success over the Tigers in 15 games and move up from their current 11th place standing. A win over Warrington Wolves last week came as a shock to many especially after Chris Chester left the club after five years in charge of Trinity.

Tries from Tom Johnstone, Mason Lino, David Fifita and Lee Kershaw saw Wakefield come away with a 28-22 win over a Warrington side who are attempting to lift the Super League trophy for the first time.

Magic Weekend was the scene when the Tigers started the impressive run against Trinity with Denny Solomona scoring four times as Powell’s side ran out 56-16 victors. This weeks game will most likely be Daryl Powell’s final ‘Calder Derby’ as Tigers coach.

Consistency is something that the Tigers have struggled with this season and Powell knows his side need to keep their recent results on their minds but also not let their concentration slip heading into future fixtures.

“We are in a good place,” Powell told Prost International.

“We have won our last two games, but we have to recognise now that we have to stay concentrated and keep playing the way we have been playing. We are looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“Wakefield played Warrington last week and got over the top of them, so we need to make sure we are right where we need to be.”
