Sheffield Wednesday’s fixtures announced ahead of their 2021/22 League One campaign

Exiled from the Championship, the condemned Owls’ fixtures for their League One campaign have been released.

Sheffield Wednesday will kickstart their season in the capital as they travel to South East London to face Charlton Athletic. The Addicks finish just outside of the play-offs last season, finishing in seventh place. It’ll be a tough affair for the Owls, however, and a revitalising pre-season could help.

August is a busy month for Wednesday, with two local fixtures on the cards as it sets to be a fiery start to the season for the Owls.

Wednesday will face fellow relegated and Yorkshire outfit, Rotherham United on August 21st away from home. Only eight miles separate these sides, and there will be bragging points on the line. The Owls also travel to League One newboys, Morecambe at the end of the month.

It’s a funny old league where anything can happen, Darren Moore’s side will be hoping to churn out points from the get-go.

September sees the Owls host Sunderland and Shrewsbury Town whilst travelling to Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic.

October is one of their busiest months at Hillsborough, two home games on the trot against Oxford United and recently promoted Bolton with trips to Wimbledon and Cambridge after that. The Owls end the month facing play-off finalists Lincoln City and last season’s League Two Champions, Cheltenham Town.

November is much quieter for Wednesday, playing the likes of Gillingham, Accrington Stanley, MK Dons and Wycombe Wanderers. However, with what’s going on at Derby County, we may see the Rams replace the Chairboys in League One.

Into the festive period now, and a trip down to the South Coast follows as the Owls face Portsmouth, shortly after they face Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road. On December 18th, Wednesday face Accrington Stanley for the final time this season.

Boxing day action is a home clash against Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton Albion, shortly followed by a trip to the Stadium of Light for the Owls’ final game of 2021.

Sheffield Wednesday start the new year off with a visit to Montgomery Watermeadows as they face off to Shrewsbury Town. The Owls host Morecambe and Plymouth in quick succession and end their month playing Oxford United and Ipswich.

Another frantic month for the Owls follows, however, this time in February. Moore’s side play Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United, Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town and lastly Charlton Athletic.

The final 10 games in what could be a promotion-chasing campaign starts at Lincoln City. Which is then followed by Cambridge United, Gillingham and Cheltenham Town. There’s no reason the Owls can’t pick up maximum points in March.

Now for the final furlong. Wednesday play host to AFC Wimbledon with two away trips in Bolton and MK Dons after that. They return to Hillsborough for the penultimate time as they host Crewe with their last away trip of the League One campaign at Wycombe.

Last of all, the Owls host Portsmouth in what could be a match that sees Wednesday return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

With the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy all to play for, it’ll be a gruelling campaign for the Owls. However, returning to England’s second division is at the forefront of everyone’s mind at Hillsborough.
