Goals from Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on either side of half-time secured victory for Tottenham over Wolves and boosted their chances of securing European football next season.

Kane had the first opportunity of the afternoon after Hojbjerg won possession deep in the Wolves half, the Spurs striker saw his shot cannon back off the outside of Rui Patricio’s post.

Adama Traore has been Wolves’ stand-out player in recent weeks and the Spanish winger drove his team forward on the counter-attack in the opening stages of the contest. His run led to Fabio Silva’s shot with the Portuguese forward testing Hugo Lloris with a deflected effort.

Traore and Silva would remain Wolves’ main attacking outlet in the first 45 minutes, Silva failing to make the most of opportunities around the box. Meanwhile, captain Conor Coady was leading by example at the back and cleared two efforts off the line late in the first-half.

Gareth Bale was enjoying success down the Tottenham right and linked play with Dele Alli regularly to present an opening for the home side. A free-kick from the Welshman was held well by the Wolves shot-stopper as Alli displayed the touches of flair often associated with the midfielder.

Son was able to shoot with his effort stinging the palms of Patricio around the half-hour mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. For Kane, the race for the Premier League Golden Boot will still be in his sights as in the 44th minute the Englishman claimed his 22nd league goal of the season.

After a superb ball from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Kane latched onto the pass, rounded Patricio and slotted home to give Spurs the lead at the break.

Ryan Mason’s team carried their momentum into the second-half and somehow failed to double their lead in the 52nd minute. After Dele Alli stole the ball from Joao Moutinho, the midfielder drove forward and released Kane to shoot.

The striker’s low shot was superbly tipped onto the post by Patricio before Alli followed up and fired an effort against the other post.

The second eventually arrived through an unlikely source. After Sergio Reguilon refused to give up on a battle against Ki-Jana Hoever, the Spaniard found Son on the edge of the box. The South Korean laid the ball off for Bale, who took on the effort first time from just inside the penalty area.

The Welshman’s effort was parried by Patricio and Hojbjerg was on hand to slot home on the follow-up. Wolves reacted well to the second goal but chances for Traore and Silva failed to be converted.

Silva’s day was over in the 81st minute, a shake of the head conveying his thoughts on his performance. The young striker found the room to shoot on multiple occasions but failed to hit the target, often appearing isolated when leading the line on his own.

Kane aimed for more goals to add to his goal tally this season but Patricio saved multiple efforts comfortably as Spurs ran out 2-0 winners.

The victory lifts Spurs above London rivals West Ham and up to sixth in the Premier League table, three points that could prove crucial in their bid to secure European football next season.
