Gareth Widdop pivotal to Warrington as they cruise to victory in the South of France

Along with the try from Widdop himself, there were also scores from Ben Currie, Toby King and Jake Mamo, which gave Warrington their second win of the season and one that ended the Dragons’ unbeaten start.

With Warrington’s key figure in the point of attack Blake Austin missing, it was expected to be a tough test for the Wolves.

The news broke about Austin’s potential absence from the game, due to his passport expiring, a day before the game and it was a story of confusion for the Warrington fans to absorb with just a day to go before the side travelled to Perpignan.

However, travel they did and it turned out to be quite a good afternoon for the team in Primrose and Blue.

Up stepped Gareth Widdop, marquee man and fellow halfback to Austin, Widdop was pivotal in the game scoring a try with a lovely step, to fend off a Catalans defender.

In games prior to this one, the win over Leigh in particular, the former Dally M award winner in Australia has been the go to man for plays on the sixth tackle and that is where his own try came from.

Taking on the Catalan defensive line to end up scoring one for himself when the game was still in the balance, albeit with the Wolves in the ascendancy.

The home side began the game brightly and capitalised on a mistake from Toby King and led the game 8-0.

Although that was as good as it got for the Dragons, after a try from second rower Ben Currie, supplied by dummy half Daryl Clark kick started the game for the visitors.

The game was capped off with a great defensive effort to keep the home side to eight points and preserved Warrington’s perfect second half showing.

The games don’t get any easier, looks as if every team have stepped up their game in 2021.

It’ll be a tough test next week for Gareth Widdop and his teammates as they face a Hull Kingston Rovers side who are coming off back to back wins over Huddersfield and Leeds.
