Gareth Widdop looking sharp heading into the new season

After a disappointing first season in Super League for Gareth Widdop, the 32-year-old looked back to his best in his side’s pre-season friendly against Leigh Centurions on Friday night.

Tom Lineham also grabbed himself a hat-trick in a very comfortable 34-12 victory for the Wolves. Warrington’s left-edge caused problems for Leigh all game with four of the seven tries scored coming down the left-hand side.

Steve Price named a strong side to face the Centurions, but the side did have notable absentees. Greg Inglis was the biggest name who didn’t feature and he remains a doubt for Round One. Mike Cooper and captain Jack Hughes also missed out.

The standout performance on the night was from Widdop, the scrum-half involved in everything positive for the Wolves. He created four tries and was very unlucky not to grab himself a well-deserved try. It was his break in the first half which created the opening try of the game for Toby King.

The England international is looking to turn his form around, after a poor first season following his move from St George Illawarra in the NRL. After his performance last night, he could be an influential part in a successful season for The Wire in Steve Price’s final year in charge.

In his post-match press conference, the Warrington coach was full of praise for his scrum half.

“I thought Gareth Widdop looked really sharp, he was fast, strong and had high energy about him.

“He has worked really hard during preseason. I was really pleased with his game tonight.”

The Betfred Super League season starts this Friday. Warrington will face Castleford Tigers on Sunday. It will be a tough first test for the Wolves with Castleford pushing them all the way in the two meetings last season.
