Sheffield Wednesday hope to escape relegation zone for the first time this season as they face Wycombe

The Owls will look to capitalise on the Chairboys’ poor league form to escape the Championship relegation zone for the first time this season.

After being handed a point deduction at the start of the current league campaign, Wednesday have spent the entirety of the season in the bottom three.

Championship survival is the biggest aim for the Yorkshire club as financial turmoil saw them drop to the bottom of the league.

Eight wins and seven draws would see the Owls sat in 20th currently if it wasn’t for the point deduction, but with still 19 games to go Sheffield Wednesday will look to escape the relegation zone as they face bottom side Wycombe.

Promoted as play-offs winners in 2019/20, Wycombe made it up to the Championship for the first time in their history.

Their three wins and seven draws this season sees the Championship new boys under real threat of relegation after their first season in the second-tier.

They boast the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 45 goals after 26 games, including a 7-2 defeat by Brentford recently. One of the highest-scoring fixture of the Championship season in all of the bad ways for Wycombe.

Last time out for the home side, they travelled to The Den to face a mid-table Millwall side that looked to build on their position already.

Callum Paterson opened the scoring for the Owls in the tenth minute as they looked to shock the Lions at home.

That turned completely on its head as Millwall started firing in the goals. Kenneth Zohore levelled the scoring in the 39th minute from the penalty spot.

Two goals in the space of a minute saw the hosts lead 3-1 into the final 20 minutes of the match. Mahlon Romeo rounded off the scoring for Gary Rowett’s men as they ran out 4-1 victors.

Wednesday were only to get two shots on target as they were well and truly battered in the final third as they lacked to create any chances of note after Paterson’s goal.

Wycombe were also beat as they hosted relegation-avoiding Nottingham Forest under the stewardship of Chris Hughton after a great January transfer window for the East Midlands club.

Nottingham Forest signing Glenn Murray scored his first goal for the club as he opened the scoring for the away side.

The 1-0 scoreline remained into the half-time interval as the Chairboys looked to avoid a humiliating defeat fo a second time this season.

Murray scored a second from the penalty spot in the 54th minute as the Brighton loanee looked to get up to speed quickly under the guidance of his old manager at the South Coast.

Anthony Knockaert completed a 3-0 victory for the Reds as they jumped four points clear of the relegation zone with Wycombe now 12 points from safety.

Last time these two clashed was back in October with Wycombe able to pick up their first victory of the Championship season against the Owls at Adams Park.

A David Wheeler goal in added time of the first half was enough for the Chairboys to prevail until the end as they earned a valuable three points against a relegation-battler.

That was the only match that Sheffield Wednesday have tasted defeat against Wycombe, beating the Buckinghamshire club three times and drawing once.

The Owls are unbeaten against their midweek opponents at Hillsborough and will look to put it right against Wycombe this time around.

A victory for Sheffield Wednesday may see them move out of the relegation zone for the first time this season as they look desperate than ever to get the three points.

Three points for Gareth Ainsworth’s men sees them move up to a tally of 19 points, six points behind the Owls who sit directly above them in the Championship table.
