Burton edge out Hull in tight affair

A last gasp winner from new signing Jonny Smith claimed all three points for Burton as they edged past Hull City at the Pirelli Stadium

In a game of few chances, it was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side who would come out on top with new signings Josh Parker and Smith linking up to give Burton a fighting chance of staying up.

The game started slowly as neither team seemed to be able to get hold of the ball and the first chance of the game would fall to the Tigers. Left-back Callum Elder got down the left-hand side and his cross was met by Keane Lewis-Potter but he could only direct his header over the bar.

The home side were nearly gifted with a chance soon after, Hull goalkeeper George Long came racing out to claim a ball but dropped it in the process, luckily for the away side he was able to reclaim the ball before a Burton player could stick it in.

Hull would have the only other half-chance in the first half with Dan Crowley managing to find space on the edge of the area but his shot was well wide of the far post.

The second half would carry on from where the first ended, neither team really managing to get a foothold on the ball but the Tigers carved out the first opening of the half just before the hour mark as Greg Docherty fired towards goal but his effort clipped off the top of the bar.

Burton would be the ones who would have the first shot on target in the game around the 70th-minute mark but Smith’s effort was palmed away by Long in the Hull goal.

The Brewers had a chance to take the lead soon after, Long palming an effort right into the path of Parker who, with the goal at his mercy, could only shoot wide.

Burton would eventually find the elusive winning goal right on the stroke of the 90th minute. Parker picked the ball up in the middle of the park, the forward found Smith who chested the ball down and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

This goal would give Burton a vital three points over high-flying Hull and now give Hasselbaink’s side a real chance at survival.
