Callum O’Hare assists twice as Coventry City down Sheffield Wednesday 2-0

Callum O’Hare starred in a high pressing Coventry City side who downed their relegation rivals 2-0, an emphatic performance as the former Aston Villa youngster shined on a cold midweek night at St Andrews.

Having spent two seasons now away from their home ground, the Sky Blues have taken to life in the Championship at their landlords’ home and it was clear to see how Coventry City have adapted to life playing in Small Heath.

Goals from Viktor Gyokeres and substitute Jamie Allen sealed all three points for City in their dominant performance.

The breaking of the deadlock came through Gyokeres in the 57^th minute, it was inevitable as the forward buried his chance past Keiren Westwood following O’Hare’s perfectly weighted pass between the Wednesday defence.

Despite the scoreline, the Owls looked promising at times when going forward but striker Josh Windass wasn’t on form to put his chances away. Barry Bannan, another former Villa player, was the bright spark for the Wednesday midfield, pulling all the strings for his team.

Gustavo Hamer almost doubled his sides lead directly from a corner, the 23-year-old hammered a cross-cum shot which caused a spot of bother for the Wednesday defence but luckily for the Owls Westwood was at hand to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

The Sky Blues’ second goal came through second half substitute Jamie Allen, the number eight was played through on goal by O’Hare. Allen’s forthcoming shot was hit hard and low, finding its way through Westwood’s legs, sinking Neil Thompson’s Wednesday further from safety.

At times Wednesday looked threatening when going forward but simply lacked the finish in the final third, which is something the South Yorkshire side must improve if they’re to fend off the depths of League One.

O’Hare has made Coventry City his home since leaving Aston Villa, initially on loan but the Villans’ head coach had other ideas following the Sky Blues’ promotion to the Championship. Leaving O’Hare to go on a free at the end of his contract.

Having crossed the half-way mark of the season, Wednesday need to start picking up points sooner rather than later or they could face relegation to League One. Despite over-turning their six-point deduction, the side are currently without a manager following Tony Pulis’ six-week tenure.

The Owls are now six points from safety, having played one more game than local rivals Rotherham. It isn’t too pretty over at Hillsborough for the time being, with the side facing up to midtable Preston North End in yet another important fixture.

Coventry City face landlords Birmingham City, who they’re three points clear of. If Mark Robins’ team play the way they did against Sheffield Wednesday, the Sky Blues would be likely to win a second game on the trot in the Championship.
