Wycombe playing better than the results as they head to Bournemouth

Wycombe visit on form Bournemouth tonight on the back of a narrow but disappointing 1-2 home loss to Coventry City.

Gareth Ainsworth thought his side were “by far the better team today” and is certain they will pick up points if they keep playing like this.

Once more they were denied a point by a late decision disallowing an equaliser, a source of incredible frustration around the Buckinghamshire club.

He may have a point but there are stark statistics which he cannot avoid.

His side have netted just three open play goals in the last eight matches. Two of them were at Preston. Even adding the two further goals from penalties to that, there is a problem to be solved.

At the back, Wanderers no longer look like a relegation side with the early season disasters now largely contained.

Although Coventry skipper Liam Kelly was an unlikely figure to score twice in his first half cameo, the quality gap between Coventry’s players and Wycombe’s was evident, though not as pronounced as in earlier matches with Millwall and Brentford.

The paucity of points being collected by those around them gives Wycombe hope.

It’s fair to say that the performances are better than the results. Bournemouth are of course one of the division’s top sides. QPR, Bristol City, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough their next four opponents are not.

Wanderers will have chances to collect points before their FA Cup date where they meet Preston, one of only two sides they’ve scored twice against.

Dan Hargraves will be at he Vitality Stadium for Prost International, covering Wycombe’s match with the Cherries.
