2020 F2 Championship goes down to the wire as Yuki Tsunoda wins the Feature Race

17 points left to play for and 14 points between the Championship battle as the 2020 F2 Champion will be crowned after the final race.

The Carlin of Yuki Tsunoda managed to convert pole position into a race win as Guanyu Zhou jumped on the podium into second and Nikita Mazepin slipped down to third after qualifying second for the race.

Callum Ilott and Mick Schumacher finished sixth and seventh respectively as they both earned eight points meaning that the UNI-Virtuosi car needs to grab the fastest lap and win the race to have the maximum chance of winning the Championship. The Prema driver needs to finish sixth or higher to earn the coveted F2 title.

Prema have wrapped up the Constructor’s Championship though as Robert Shwartzman’s fifth-place finish was enough for the Italian outfit to win that crown as they hope to capture the double with the Driver’s Championship.

As It Happened

Yuki Tsunoda initially got the line well, but was seen adjusting his helmet as Nikita Mazepin took the lead into turn one and Robert Shwartzman jumped to second as the Japenese driver slipped to third.

It took Tsunoda to finally move back into the lead of the race after 14 laps as the front two of Mazepin and Shwartzman pitted and fitted new tyres.

Callum Ilott opted the same option as the two front runners and pitted for new tyres as Mick Schumacher moved ahead of Marcus Armstrong to be temporarily behind his title rival before the UNI-Virtuosi pitted.

The two Russians looked to be on the charge through the field to catch up Tsunoda as the Japanese driver pitted on lap 16 and had fresher tyres to lap quicker and to overtake the pair ahead of him.

Tsunoda was back on the charge and looked to overtake Shwartzman into turn one as he tried to dive down the inside of the Prema driver, but had to evade that move as Christian Lundgaard appeared from the pits and the Japanese driver slotted behind the Russian.

The Carlin moved ahead of the Prema into turn four on the same lap which released the pole sitter to chase after Mazepin.

In the title race, Schumacher moved ahead of Dan Ticktum and Pedro Piquet to claim eighth-place as Ilott dropped behind Guanyu Zhou.

A back and forward battle between the two leaders saw Tsunoda finally take the top spot after a late braking move on the Hitech driver.

After the Russian lost momentum, he became vulnerable to Felipe Drugovich. Both the drivers were stunned when Zhou came out of nowhere to steal second place and left Mazepin in third and the MP Motorsport of Drugovich in fourth.

Shwartzman finished fifth as Ilott clinched sixth. Schumacher finished seventh, Jehan Daruvala in eighth, Dan Ticktum in ninth and Pedro Piquet in tenth.
