News August 11 – Kent pair rewrite record books/ Womens Community Shield

Jordan Cox (238*) and Jack Leaning (220*) smashed Kent’s record books, joining in a partnership of 423. It is Kent’s highest for any wicket in first-class cricket. Both completed unbeaten double centuries.

They previous record of 382 by Sean Dickson and Joe Denly which had stood for only three years. The stand was unbeaten when Kent had declared their first innings on 530-1. They hit 56 fours and three sixes after Daniel Bell-Drummond was out for 43 with Kent on 107-1.

Kent won the match by an inning and 25 runs having lost just one wicket.


Dean Holden has been appointed Bristol City manager.

The 40-year-old was previously assistant to the sacked Lee Johnson. Holden has signed a rolling 12-month contract and will be assisted by coaches Keith Downing and Paul Simpson, who have recently taken charge of the England Under-19 and Under-20 squads respectively.


The first Women’s Community Shield match to be held since 2008 will precede the men’s fixture at Wembley on Saturday, 29 August.

Chelsea will face FA Cup holders Manchester City immediately before Liverpool and Arsenal meet to begin the new men’s season.


Manchester United needed a penalty to progress to the last four of the Europa League. In extra time, Juan Mata fed Anthony Martial who won the penalty. Bruno Fernandes did the rest and United will now play Sevilla or Wolves.


Tottenham Hotspur confirm the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton. Spurs paid £15 Million for the Danish midfielder, who has signed a five-year-deal at the North London club.

Kyle Walker-Peters has gone in the other direction and signs for the South Coast club on a permanent basis, following his loan spell at St. Marys.
