Lewis Hamilton routine win, Max Verstappen and Valterri Bottas fight and much more taken from the 2020 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton drove comfortably to take the win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. We learned many things from the Grand Prix, Haas’ sneaky strategy, Racing Point’s pace and many more.

There were battles for second, points battles and many more things as the drivers contested at the Hungaroring for Round Three of the short F1 2020 calendar.

Lewis Hamilton in control (again)

The Hungarian Grand Prix had the same outcome that the Styrian Grand Prix gave us, a Lewis Hamilton victory.

The Brit drove a stellar race and turned pole position into a race win. He also grabbed an extra point for the fastest lap of the race.

The Mercedes driver reels in Michael Schumacher’s record of wins – victory at the Hungaroring has put him just five behind the German legend’s record of 91.

Max Verstappen’s unlimited talent and defense skills were on show

Verstappen tangled with the barrier near the end of the formation lap before the race. His mechanics worked tirelessly to make sure the young Dutchman was able to race, and in 15-20 minutes were able to fix the problem.

He started seventh on the grid and had a great start, he was able to get himself up in the podium places and was basically running in second the whole race.

A late threat from Valteri Bottas saw the Red Bull driver put in fast laps to fend off the threat from the oncoming Mercedes driver. It looked certain for Bottas to overtake Verstappen on the last lap of the race under DRS, but the Dutchman would hold onto second place until the very end.

Racing Point flew without wings

It was another top performance from the Racing Point team. This time it was Lance Stroll, who got himself close to a podium finish, ultimately finishing fourth after qualifying third for the race.

After three races in 2020, Racing Point have amounted 40 points in the Constructors’ Championship (one point fewer than McLaren and 15 points less than Red Bull).

The Mercedes engine inside the Racing Point car has for sure helped the lower-end team become a real contender to join the midfield in the battle to try and dethrone Mercedes.

Haas’ sneaky strategy before race start

Both Haas drivers asked to pit after the formation lap to put on slick tyres. Kevin Magnussen was on full wet tyres and Roamin Grosjean was on intermediate tyres like everyone else apart from Magnussen.

The gamble for slick tyres ultimately paid off for the Haas team, as they were running in the points for most of the race and technically only needed to stop once for new tyres, after they had their first set of dry tyres wear out.

Grosjean dropped out the points rapidly as his Ferrari powered Haas was overtaken by most of the drivers. Magnussen was running in the top three at one point, but finished tenth in the end. It was still a good point for the Haas team and ultimately can be taken as a massive win for the drivers and especially the strategists as their gamble paid them dividends.
