Mercedes lock-out the front row ahead of the 2020 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton qualified on pole position ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll ahead of Sunday’s race at the Hungaroring.

Q1

The first qualifying session got underway with no delays as the drivers got out onto the Hungaroring track with the weather conditions good for a dry qualifying but clouds ahead could give the qualifying a wet twist as there is a 90% chance of rain.

The Red Bull of Max Verstappen led the drivers away from the pit lane to start their Q1 laps early as the rain radars showed the risk of rain.

The first time set in the session was by Verstappen. The flying Dutchman set a time of 1:16.183 but Lewis Hamilton eclipsed that time by five-tenths and then Valterri Bottas eclipsed his Mercedes teammate by about one-tenth.

With five minutes left in the first qualifying session, Hamilton was P1 with a time of 1:15.366 as he was 0.118 seconds faster than his Mercedes teammate.

The drivers knocked out of Q1 were the two Haas drivers of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi and Daniil Kvyat.

The two fastest drivers were the Racing Points of Sergio Perez who finished P1 with a lap of 1:14.681 with Lance Stroll two-tenths off of his teammate and Lewis Hamilton was one-hundredth behind the Canadian driver in P3.

Q2

Q2 got underway shortly after the finish of the first qualifying session with George Russell the first driver out on the track.

Russell set the first time of the second qualifying session with a 1:15:698 but shortly after Stroll goes faster than the Williams driver by four-tenths.

Five minutes remained in this qualifying session and Hamilton was P1 with a time of 1:14.261, two-tenths faster than his Mercedes teammate, and Sebastian Vettel was eight-tenths behind the British driver in P3.

It was a horror show for Alex Albon as he was only able to qualify P13. Albon was joined by Daniel Ricciardo, George Russell, Esteban Ocon and Nicholas Latifi.

At the top of the driver timings was Lewis Hamilton as he was nearly three-tenths faster than Valterri Bottas and Max Verstappen put his car in P3 seven-tenths slower than the Hamilton.

Q3

The Q3 session got off underway swiftly after Q2 with only ten drivers left battling for P1 for the 2020 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll was the first driver out onto the track in the final qualifying session with the Racing Point driver looking strong in the first two sessions.

The Canadian’s lap time was the first set and he set a time of 1:14.671 with Hamilton going into the 1:13’s as he set a time of 1:13.613.

Five minutes remained in the last qualifying session with Hamilton on pole position at the moment after a 1:13.613 lap time. Bottas was P2 as he was three-tenths slower than his teammate and the pink car of Racing Point was P3, one second slower than Hamilton.

Hamilton qualified on pole position for the second week in a row as he out-qualified his teammate by one-tenth.

The final grid looked like this: Hamilton in P1 as Bottas joins him on the front row, Stroll and Perez were on the second-row in P3 and P4. The two Ferrari’s were on the third row as Vettel out qualified Leclerc with the two drivers in P5 and P6. Verstappen was in P7, Norris was in P8, Sainz was in P9 and Gasly rounded off the top ten.

Ricciardo will start in P11, Russell in P12, Albon in P13, Ocon in P14, Latifi in P15, Magnussen in P16, Kvyat in P17, Grosjean in P18, Giovinazzi in P19 and Raikkonen will start from the back of the grid in P20.
