Liverpool secure the Premier League title as Chelsea triumph over Manchester City

Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City secured Liverpool’s long-awaited 19th championship.

City needed to win to put Liverpool’s crown on hold for another week, but that would not prove to be.

The first serious chance came in the 17th minute, as a curling cross from a free-kick went through Riyad Mahrez’s feet and found Fernandinho who directed the ball towards the goal, only for Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to pull off an acrobatic save to keep the score level.

At the cooling break, the visitors owned 66% of the ball possession, as Lampard’s men had yet nothing to show in terms of danger.

Despite not having left their own half often, the hosts proved to be more dynamic and efficient in their attempts. Mason Mount found Ross Barkley before an empty net, the Chelsea number 8 tried his luck, nevertheless, Fernandinho interrupted the ball from crossing the line.

A corner followed, taken by Willian towards Andreas Christensen, who managed to get power yet missed on the turn as Ederson deflected it towards Azpilicueta, the Spaniard attempted a conversion, but it failed as the ball went flying above the bar.

Six minutes after the half-hour mark and with only their third shot on target the hosts opened the scoring as they capitalised on City’s mistake in communication following a free-kick in the final third. Christian Pulisic recovered the ball, outran Benjamin Mendy and opened the scoring as he buried the ball in the bottom-left corner.

Chelsea finished the half infront, and if City could not find two goals in the next 45 minutes, they would be surrendering their title to Liverpool.

But City would equalise just ten minutes after the break from a stunning free-kick goal from Kevin De Bruyne, which curled into the top left corner of the net

Four minutes afterward, the visitors counter-attacked at the wake of a corner, Sterling had the chance to capitalise with the momentum, however, the Englishman was unlucky as he was denied by the right post as the scoreline remained at 1-1.

Mount intercepted a poor pass from Ederson, and ran towards the box, but hit the wrong side of the net just after the hour mark.

Pulisic almost got his side on top again, with just under 20 minutes left. The American exploited another poor back pass, dashed in Ederson’s direction and beat the Brazilian keeper, the winger lacked power on his shot which meant a resilient Kyle Walker was able to clear it off the line.

Six minutes later, Fernandinho slapped the ball with his hand to keep it off the line after a double save from his keeper, following a VAR check, the defender got sent off and a penalty was given to Chelsea.

Willian sent the City keeper to the wrong side and kept his flawless penalty conversion record for the London club. The visitors had a lot on their plate as they became a goal and a player down.

Guardiola’s men tried in vain until the end of the usual time before the referee added six minutes of injury time.

The man in black finally blew the last whistle as all sorts of emotions erupted over the English football world.

Chelsea had helped Leicester win the title four years after holding Tottenham to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, and now they had helped Liverpool win their first Premier League title in 30 years.

Both teams now turn their attention to Sunday for their retrospective FA Cup Quarter Final ties.
