Mainz and Augsburg clash with both seeking to ensure Bundesliga status

With both teams sitting just above the relegation play-off place in the Bundesliga, Mainz and Augsburg will understand the importance of three points in the hunt for Bundesliga survival.

Mainz may look to striker Adam Szalai to feature heavily in the game, the Hungarian has netted a career-best five times against Augsburg. Confidence should be high for the 05ers after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 last weekend.

Augsburg will be concerned over the form of their top scorer, Florian Niederlechner, who has now failed to find the net in 857 minutes of Bundesliga action. They may instead have to rely on full-back Philipp Max, the left-back netting a league-high eight goals from defence.

After a 3-0 win over Schalke once the league resumed, Augsburg now have dropped seven points from their last three matches and find themselves in danger of slipping into relegation danger.

Team news

Mainz will be without starting ‘keeper Robin Zentner with Florian Muller continuing to despite in his absence. Dong-won Ji is the only other doubt for Achim Beierlorzer’s men.

Midfielder Jan Moravek is the only confirmed absence for Augsburg heading into Sunday’s fixture, Sergio Cordova, Fabian Giefer, Andre Hahn and Iago are all doubts.

Most recent meeting

Augsburg won the fixture when playing in front of their home fans in December thanks to goals from Marco Richter and Niederlechner after Levin Öztunali had given Mainz the lead.
