Late Goretzka winner sends Bayern closer to Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich are now just one win away from their eighth consecutive title, after they defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides were missing key players as Bayern were without Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller who had contributed to almost 70% of their sides’ goals, while Borussia Mönchengladbach were missing Alesanne Plea.

The away side would lose another star man in the ninth minute as Marcus Thuram hobbled off, replaced by Breel Embolo who made an instant impact. A quarter of an hour in, Embolo played a through ball into the Jonas Hoffmann who slotted the ball in, however, VAR ruled his goal out for offside.

It was the visitors who had started the match the strongest, but they could have gone a goal behind, when keeper Yann Sommer produced a remarkable close range save from Lucas Hernandez.

Sommer has the second best record as a keeper in the Bundesliga. Ahead of him, the man at the other of the field Manuel Neuer, and he proved why in the 25th minute, when he kept Embolo out. The Swiss international should have scored from the rebound, but he placed it wide.

But just a minute later, Bayern were in the lead. It was a casual error from Yann Sommer, who played the ball to the youngster Joshua Zirkzee to easily finish into an empty net.

They weren’t infront for long however. Benjamin Pavard put the ball into his own net, following a ball in from Patrick Herrmann.

Die Fohlen could have gone infront eight minutes after the break, Embolo squad the ball to Herrmann who was denied by Neuer.

Sommer then produced a great save 25 minutes to go from Serge Gnabry’s deflected effort.

But Bayern would find the winner, five minutes from time. Benjamin Pavard was found in open space to play a low cross to Leon Goretzka, who guided the ball passed Sommer.

It’s a massive blow for Rose’s side, who could drop out of the top four if Leverkusen win tomorrow at Schalke.

But it’s a massive win for Hans Dieter Flick’s men, who will be crowned champions if they win at Werder Bremen on Tuesday.
