Bundesliga Matchday 25: Last of the full stadiums?

Relegation dog fights, blowouts, and another coach bites the dust. And is the Bundesliga going to empty stadiums?

Bayer Leverkusen found their scoring boots versus Eintracht Frankfurt in a 4-0 win. With progress in the Pokal and the Europa League, questions are will they continue the good run on all fronts.

Since the Winter Break, Leverkusen is on a massive tear. Progress against Porto and Union Berlin in Europa League and Pokal, respectively, has netted them 19 points from a possible 24. That’s one hot team! Eintracht just never got going and with their own progress in Pokal and Europa League, there is the thought they will merely wipe this from memory.

Bayern celebrated 120 years as a club in style against local adversary FC Augsburg 2-0 in Munich. In the process, the result ended with Martin Schmidt being fired by Augsburg.

Bayern played their third match without Robert Lewandowski and they didn’t seem too bothered. They had a strong performance everywhere on the pitch which lends thought of how far they will go in the Champions League.

In the biggest relegation six-pointer of the week, Werder Bremen and Hertha Berlin played out a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Bremen has been teetering on the edge and after a quick first half lead there was belief this was a start of something of a rescue for the season. That was blotted out by a determined display from Hertha which made each fan base think they were unlucky.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

FC Koln defeated their fellow Bundesliga promotee 2-1 to move to a comfortable 10th in the table while Paderborn is rooted to the bottom.

Freiburg found that scoring touch as they put three goals behind Union Berlin to stay within touching distance of the European places.

Schalke ended their five match scoreless drought, but could’t find the gumption to push on as they drew with Hoffenheim 1-1.

Wolfsburg put a dent into the title aspirations of RB Leipzig with a 0-0 draw that put another two points between the top and now third place.

In the Battle of the Borussia’s, Gladbach’s credentials took a massive hit as they fell to Dortmund 2-1 and dropping out of the Champions League places.

Fortuna Dusseldorf played out a 1-1 draw with fellow relegation scrappers Mainz.

Coronavirus

The Bundesliga is known for their stadium atmospheres. Now that is under threat as coronavirus throws fan safety into danger.

This weekend’s coming action looks to be one that could change at from full capacity crowds to eerie silence that you can hear the players and coaches yell.

That has happened for the first time ever on Wednesday as Gladbach defeated FC Koln, 2-1, before an empty Borussia Park. At the time of this reporting, only the match between Augsburg and Wolfsburg is going to be played with any fans in attendance.
