As it happened: Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-0 to move the Red Devils to fifth in the Premier League

Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-0 in the latest episode of the Manchester derby. Goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay saw United fight off City comfortably.

Manchester United started the first-half of the Manchester derby.

The first five minutes of the first-half saw the sides exchange passes between each other and no real threats were posed.

Luke Shaw made a mistake that saw Sergio Aguero trying to find his way through. The strikers ball found Raheem Sterling who forced David de Gea to make a save.

Aguero looked to find himself through on goal as he skipped past Harry Maguire, but Nemanja Matic covered well for his centre backs.

First real great chance of the first-half fell to United. A poor touch from Aguero gifted the ball to Matic who slid the ball through to Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder was able to thred it through to Daniel James with the forwards shot going straight at Ederson.

A fantatstic pass from Brandon Williams found Anthony Martial. The Frenchman’s touch was brilliant, but his shot was blocked by Nicolas Otamendi.

Fernandinho lost in a 50/50 dual against Martial. The Frenchman burst through, but his shot was stopped easily by Ederson.

Anthony Martial squeezed a shot past Ederson after a free-kick in the 30th minute. A wonderful pass from Fernandes created the chance for Martial with the forward able to convert.

United got into their stride with another chance created minutes after the goal. Williams crossed a great ball into Fernandes with the midfielders header unable to find the target.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka weaved his way past Otamendi and Oleksandr Zinchenko, but ultimately his cross was blocked.

Great build-up play from City especially from Joao Cancelo, but the full-backs cross flashed past everyone in blue who were in the United box.

Mike Dean blew his whistle to end the first-half. A strong start from City was combatted with United fighting back in the last 20 minutes of the half. Anthony Martial’s goal in the 30th minute seperated the two sides.

Manchester City kicked off the second-half of the Manchester derby.

In the 47th minute, Zinchenko played the ball to Sterling who found Aguero in space, but the striker was offsideas he slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Ederson made an error that Martial tried to get onto, but the goalkeeper was able to clear the ball away from the Frenchman.

In the 56th minute, Phil Foden found himself on the edge of the area and fired the shot goalwards. De Gea was forced to make a save. The subsequent corner came to nothing.

Gundogan whipped a ball in from the corner. Otamendi flashed the header over the bar.

James was able to break through a ball from Harry Maguire. The cross from the Welshman unable to find Martial in the middle.

James yet again was able to skip past Otamendi and fired a shot with Ederson able to clear it away for a corner.

With 15 minutes to go, City looked to be on the front foot. Riyad Mahrez found Sterling with the forward unable to cnnect with the ball. Gabriel Jesus also had a shot and forced de Gea to make a great save.

In the 90th minute, Sterling looked to score the equalizer. His weak shot came straight at de Gea.

Deep into added time, Ederson threw the ball out. His throw found Scott McTominay, with the midfielder able to shoot and score to set the score at 2-0 to United.

Mike Dean blew the whistle not long after. United deserved the win dominating most of the game. City’s possession game did not pay off and United came through the storm to win 2-0 against their Manchester rivals.
