Kevin De Bruyne’s spot-kick secured Manchester City their first-ever victory over Real Madrid in a 2-1 victory in the Champions League.

Both sides had crucial chances to go in at half-time in front. Ederson produced a brilliant save on the half-hour mark to keep out Karim Benzema’s header. The save almost fell to Ederson’s fellow countryman Vinicius Jr, however, the ball went sliding past the Brazillian.

Then just before the interval, Gabriel Jesus’ volley ricocheted off Sergio Ramos, but the shot was cleared off the line.

The home side took the lead on the hour mark. Vinicius took advantage of some casual play between Rodri and Nicholas Otamendi, he played the ball to Isco, who slotted it past Ederson.

But City responded with 12 minutes left, with Gabriel Jesus heading passed former Chelsea keeper’ Thibaut Courtois to give the visitors a crucial away goal.

Then with eight minutes to go, Raheem Sterling, who was subbed on by Pep Guardiola, drove into the box and won his side a penalty following a foul by Dani Carvajal.

Kevin De Bruyne placed it passed Courtois and sealed Manchester City the victory in Madrid, scoring his 50th goal for the club in the process.

A bad night for Zinedine Zidane’s men was made worse after their captain Sergio Ramos was sent off late on for denying Jesus a goalscoring opportunity.

The win has also come at a cost however for City. Aymeric Laporte was taken off with an injury and Benjamin Mendy is suspended for the second leg.

It is a memorable European night for City and for Guardiola too, who played and managed Real’s archrivals Barcelona. They return to the North-West with a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg at the Etihad in three weeks’ time.

Guardiola’s men will now look ahead to their EFL Cup final clash with Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday, while Real turn their attention to this weekend’s El Classico with Barca.
