Bundesliga matchday 13 review: Foals go first

Bayern no longer invincible, Gladbach ready for a fight, and Klinsmann starts his tenure at Hertha. All this in the Bundesliga matchday 13.

Bayer Leverkusen turned a massive win in the Champions League into one in the Bundesliga away in Munich, 2-1, by way of a Leon Bailey brace which means the race for Europe is as tight as ever.

In the history of Thomas Muller in the Bundesliga, whenever he scores a goal Bayern never loses. As there is always a first time for everything, Leverkusen had the immediate answer to the Muller goal as Bailey put away his second of the match. Leverkusen is high flying now and can only be expected to push further up the Bundesliga table.

Jurgen Klinsmann was chosen to save Hertha’s season. Against Borussia Dortmund, it wasn’t exactly the start Klinsmann wanted as a three-minute double salvo from Jadon Sancho and Thorgen Hazard won the day for BVB.

While a quick two goal series from Dortmund was a welcome relief, most hardcore fans wanted more. Hertha isn’t a quick fix and while there is quality in the squad, a turn from this bad run will be difficult to come by. BVB will take the win because they will have moved forward in the table, but there is a chance that the Black and Yellow will change their fortunes.

The Foals of Borussia Monchengladbach found themselves in a test with SC Freiburg and despite the best efforts from the Black Forest club, a 4-2 win keeps the Black and White top of the Bundesliga.

A pair of early goals in the first half livened things up. It was after the break that the heat was turned on by the Foals. Three goals later the fans were cheering on their new heroes as the big fight next week vs Bayern looms large as the biggest match of the season and one that will dictate where the title goes.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

Schalke found themselves on the winning side yet again with a 2-1 home win over Union Berlin to go third in the table.

Fortuna Dusseldorf earned a long sought after point away to Hoffenheim that might actually save them from relegation by the end of the season.

FC Koln found themselves again to only be able to earn one point at home in a 1-1 draw against Augsburg that they will regret come the end of the season.

RB Leipzig kept pace with BMG as they defeated Paderborn 3-2. Credit to the losers who have now scored as many and more goals than four clubs currently above them in the table for not giving up yet.

Werder Bremen ended their winless run stretching from September with a thrilling 3-2 win in Wolfsburg. This will keep the Wolves fans calling for the head of Florian Kohfeldt at bay.

In the Rhein-Main Derby Monday, visitors Eintracht Frankfurt took a first half lead before a red card and two subsequent goals meant a third straight defeat for the Eagles and two wins in two for new Mainz coach Achim Beierlorzer.
