Hampshire confirm signing of Nathan Lyon for 2020 season

Hampshire have completed the signing of experienced Australian bowler Nathan Lyon for the 2020 season.

The 31-year-old has signed a red-ball only contract and will available from the start of the season.

The off-spinner played a key role in this summer’s Ashes, picking up 20 wickets as Tim Paine’s side retained the urn.

He adds great experience to the Hampshire spin attack which already includes Liam Dawson, Mason Crane and Brad Taylor.

Lyon has had one previous spell in the County Championship, that came with Worcestershire in 2017.

The Australian has taken 535 first-class wickets in 153 matches to date.

He joins a Hampshire side who finished third in the County Championship last season, although they were over 50 points behind eventual winners Essex.

“I’m very much look forward to playing with Hampshire in next year’s County Championship” said Lyon. It is a fabulous opportunity to be involved with a leading county who have had a long and successful relationship with Australian cricketers.

“I love playing cricket in England and no doubt will enjoy the 2020 summer with the Hampshire players, coaches, members and supporters. We will all be focused on winning the County Championship in 2020 – I can’t wait.”

Lyon is Australia’s second most successful spinner of all time, claiming 363 wickets to date.  He is third on the list of all time Aussie wicket-takers. behind Aussie greats Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
