The Mexican was expected to complete his trilogy with Golovkin at the end of this year but has instead opted to face Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light-heavyweight title on November 2.
Despite the pair sharing a ring twice, it has done little to stop the bad blood between them.
On Saturday night, ‘Triple G’ was the subject of a contentious win at the Madison Square Garden. During certain stages of the gruelling fight, the 37-year-old appeared somewhat cautious and vulnerable, particularly when being attacked to the body.
Notoriously known for his brute force and iron resistance, the Kazakh’s most recent performance left little to be desired. It raised the question whether age is finally catching up on the IBF middleweight champion.
Speaking to ‘TV Azteca’, Canelo believes it’s proof that Golovkin has not got the ambition anymore.
He said:
“I’m facing a pure world champion (in Kovalev). I’m going up two-weight divisions. His opponents already come losing. He no longer poses a challenge. I’ve already beaten him. I gave him 24 rounds. He couldn’t do it.
“What’s going to happen in the third fight? I’m going to beat him again. I’m even going to knock him out. It’s just business.”
With the pair recently signing to U.S streaming service ‘DAZN’, it seemed inevitable both were going to square off for the third time. The trilogy fight was set to settle their long-running feud and cement either one’s legacy.
Despite the clash failing to materialise for the back-end of the year, ‘Triple G’ remains optimistic the fight can happen in 2020:
“Absolutely I still want Canelo. I’m just open to anybody. Everything is ready, just call Canelo. If he says yes, lets do it.”
However for Canelo, attentions now turn to his upcoming fight with Sergey Kovalev in just under three weeks. The Mexican attempts to seek another world title in his fourth different weight class.
