Bundesliga matchday six: Beware away teams

A first in the Bundesliga as no club who played at home registered a victory this week. We also have the return of a sleeping giant, a new team at the top, and pending European adventures.

Schalke is always a club running on emotions. They pulled off a result against table topping Leipzig, 3-1. This brings both on par at 13 points from six matches played.

Since taking over from an under-performing season, David Wagner has been doing good things bringing back to life a squad that was considered all but dead. Now with new life, the Royal Blues can focus on a return to fortunes. Leipzig, while defeated, will look at Lyon in the Champions League and think of a perfect way to rebound.

Borussia Dortmund, pre-season favourite to have a run at the title, faltered for the third week running as they failed to defeat injury-plagued Werder Bremen, drawing 2-2.

A draw that will feel like a loss, Dortmund has not been on their top game. This is now five points that have been dropped against lesser opposition that BVB was in position to take all three from each match. Questions will abound, but the Champions League beckons with Slavia Prague and a chance to turn around momentum.

Bayern Munich returned to the top spot of the Bundesliga with a 3-2 away win at Paderborn. The Lewandowski and Coutinho connection is on full display.

Loan signing Philippe Coutinho has been a real bright star for Munich. versus Paderborn. He scored one and assisted in another and has been threading passes through the eye of a needle. The issue is again the lack of planning in defence as lowly Paderborn put two goals away.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Portuguese connection was on display for a 2-1 win at Union Berlin, next up a Europa League trip to Guimaraes in Portugal.

Wolfsburg visited Mainz and was fortunate to come away with a 1-0 win to maintain their unbeaten start.

Borussia Monchengladbach unleashed everything versus Hoffenheim in their 3-0 victory to set up a midweek Europa League trip to Turkey.

Hertha Berlin unleashed a world of hurt on FC Koln. A 4-0 win means two on the bounce for the Old Lady.

Freiburg continued their fast-paced start with a 2-1 win over Dusseldorf to go third in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen showed in their 3-0 win over Augsburg that against the lesser opposition they cannot be stopped.
